Why Twitter is Vital for Business

This is a guest post by ZK. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

Twitter is one of the best business tools in the internet. It now boasts more than 50 million visitors every month. The following are different ways Twitter can be used for business to increase traffic and revenue, reduce costs and improve services.

  1. Keep track of real time discussions about your brand or company. This can help your management and marketing teams to see what people are saying presently about your company or your brand. Marketing campaigns can then be modified based on the monitoring.
  2. Carry out real time searches concerning your niche, including monitoring the competition and seeing what people are saying about them on Twitter. Some of the tools that are useful for searches include Google alert and Tweetdeck.
  3. Broadcast headlines and links that can generate traffic for your blog, website, YouTube channels and landing pages.
  4. Enhance customer service by keeping track of discussions about your company or brand. You can then respond fast to address potentially detrimental PR disasters.
  5. Communicate and interact within your business sector, niche or marketplace through direct messages, retweeting their tweets, or commenting on their blogs. This will help you connect easily with some people who would otherwise not respond to an email or take a phone call.
  6. Run special promotions and deals on Twitter that will help you sell slow moving stock or drive traffic to your site.
  7. Build your personal and company’s brand by presenting yourself as an expert or thought leader. Post great tweets regularly and embed links which direct readers back to your site or blog.
  8. Connect with other leaders in your niche by following them and leaving comments on their tweets. With time, they might return the favor by following you and commenting on your tweets.

New Twitter Button WordPress Plugin

Twitter rolled out their official Twitter button yesterday for websites and bloggers.  This button will most likely take over the button that was created by Tweetmeme.  We have already implemented the button as it seems to load a little quicker and is endorsed by Twitter (obviously).  Twitter announced their button on their blog with a nice video about the button.  It is fairly easy to implement and can be done with about two lines of code.

If you are a wordpress blogger and do not want to implement the code yourself, a fellow blogger has already created a plugin for anyone running WordPress 3.0+.  It has not been tested on anything below 3.0  The plugin is easy to use and can be configured just like the Tweetmeme button.  If you want the plugin, checkout Blogsessive and download it for free.  You will have the new Twitter button on your wordpress blog in no time.  You can see the options below that the free twitter button plugin has:

If you want to customize the button and put it in another location in your posts or on your website, then checkout Twitter for the button and the corresponding code that it will provide.  Do you think the new Twitter button will take over Tweetmeme?  Will most people adopt it and start implementing it soon?  Let us know if you like it or think it even matters to change to the new Twitter button, we want to hear from you!

Small Business Checklist Summary

We have a list of 10 checklist items that every Small Business needs to think about.  While we did create a more detailed version of each, we are going to put them all in this post for easy access and readability.  This is for anyone looking to start a business in the new year or for anyone that has just started a business and wants more information on how to keep it going.  Below is our Small Business Checklist.  Click each item for the full article.

Small Business Checklist Item #1 – Business Name

Choose a business name that suits what you want to do and plan to do in the future.  Many entrepreneurs try to pick a name that they like, but sometimes it does not encompass what your company is going to do.  A word of advice that many people do not think about is that you should not have a company name that has your name in it.  The main reason for this is because if you ever have a chance to sell the business, there is less likelyhood that someone will purchase your business because of the name.  Business Investors and purchasers want a name that can keep people interested and is memorable.  Using your name is an easy way to create a company name, but not the most effective in the long run.

Small Business Checklist Item #2 – Research

We need to expand a little further on the Business name from yesterday. Please make sure that after you pick a business name, make sure you have the right to use it in your state. You can usually check this out with your Secretary of State website. Once you verify that you can get it, go to the register of deeds and fill out a DBA form to secure the name and then do it with the Secretary of State (depending on your business form, which we will discuss a little later)

Small Business Checklist Item #3 – Business Structure

Ok, so you have done your research and realize that your business idea is a viable one.  Now you need to look into how you want to structure your business.  There are 4 basic structures to choose from with variations within each structure.  The main thing that you need to think about are covered with the following points.

Small Business Checklist Item #4 – Business Plan

This is a step that many small businesses forget to do.  While a business plan is not really required to run your business, it is a very helpful tool.  If you do not know what a business plan is, it is simply a written format of how you want to run the business and what the business stands for, as well as the mission of the company.  These can take time to create, but they will help you in the future to keep your company on track with your original goals.

Small Business Checklist Item #5 – Proper Forms and IDs

We know that it can be exciting to start up a new company and get selling or have your ideas become reality.  The one thing that we ask is that you make sure that you have all the proper forms and certificates in order to sell properly.  Each state require a certain set of forms in order to be a legal business, most require business license and sales tax ID’s.

Small Business Checklist Item #6 – Take Inventory or Dropship

We are asked about this more times than we can count.  Please note that this tip is really only dealing with companies that sell online, not really traditional retailers with brick and mortar stores.  This is an important discussion because it lays the foundation to how success you can be either online.  We will go through some quick pros and cons of each, so you can make a little more informed decision.

Small Business Checklist Item #7 – Insurance

To insure or Not to Insure?  This is a good question, but the answer is simple……Get insurance!  There are many of you out there that have not taken the time to look into good business insurance for whatever company you run.  This is a very important part of business to protect your investment.  We will not go into detail about all the insurance types out there for businesses, but we will show you some points to think about.

Small Business Checklist Item #8 – Calculate Profit Margins

This is a simple task to accomplish, but we have spoken to many people that have started a business that never really looked into creating prices for their products or services that gave them a positive net margin.  We are sure that many of you have probably done this as your started your business, so this tip is really for those thinking about starting one or just starting one.  Please take the time to properly calculate your profit margins on your products or services.

Small Business Checklist Item #9 – Employees

If your company is at the stage where it needs to hire employees, you better take this stage very seriously.  You are going to be trusting people with the company that you build from the ground up, so you need to make sure that you take the proper steps in hiring the right individuals.

Small Business Checklist Item #10 – Social Media

As the internet ages and online marketing gets harder, companies need to now think about using social media as a marketing medium.  If your company is not using social media as a way to attract new customers, then you really need to think about starting.  Social Media outlets include blogs, twitter, facebook, you tube, and more.  These are great venues to build your brand online.

How Will You Treat Social Media in 2010?

As 2009 nears an end and 2010 begins, it is time for both online and offline marketers to get their agendas finalized and hopefully budgets together.  As we look back at the struggles of 2009 with the recession, we see that one medium has thrived and will continue to thrive.  Social Media has blown the gates down this year as many retailers start using it to promote their companies and provide deals and sales to their followers.  The main question is will you start or continue with social media?

If you have thought about getting into social media, but just haven’t done it yet, 2010 looks like it is the year to start.  With more and more people jumping onto social networks and following their favorite retailers, everyone should start getting a piece of the pie.  A lot of companies have created new positions for social media in order for everything to be properly tracked and accounted for.  It is easy for customers to post negative things about your company and you want someone or a team to be on top of that and provide real time action for those negative comments.  This shows that you are dedicated to customer service and only Social Media provides that instant fire fight capability.  Without it, you resort to trying to resolve issues the old fashion way.  As more retailers and businesses join the social media ranks, it will become the mainstream way to handle customer service issues and the most cost effective.  There have been some companies that have eliminated their phone staff for social media experts.  This method does not work for everyone, but it can work for some.

If you are already participating in social media, how can you improve on it?  Does your company provide exclusive deals via twitter or facebook?  Do you offer product reviews via Youtube?  Are your company updates visible to your followers and your groups?  There are many ways to improve how you use social media, so think outside the box and use this medium as a way to improve your relationship with your customers.  If you have the capability, it would be wise to assemble a team to improve your social media usage and increase its power for your company.  2010 is the year of social media, so jump on board and control your company’s brand a little better.

Google Launches Goo.gl URL Shortening Service

Google never lets anyone have their moment.  Just as Facebook launched their URL Shortening service: fb.me, Google lets us all know that the search giant has joined with the launch of Goo.gl.  With the huge popularity of Bit.ly on twitter on other places that reguire short URL’s, Google and other companies have joined with their own URL shortening service.  It is available for Google Products and not for wide consumer use.  They say that Goo.gl provides Stability, Security, and Speed.  These sound like core competencies that Google always tries to provide to its user base on every product it releases.  It looks like people will be able to use this service on Twitter if they already have Google Products.  Leave it to Google to squash Facebook’s URL Shortening Parade.  Who do you think is next to the URL Shortening Game?
