Amazon has really pushed the envelopes of online marketplaces. They are really taking a lot away from Ebay and will continue to do so with their great service and easy to use marketplace. They have just announced another great feature that allows sellers to purchase postage as well as print out shipping labels for the US Postal Service. All these services can now be found within their seller central manage orders section. This provides a more streamlined order processing line and will hopefully provide quicker shipping for end users. Everyone wins in this situation, which is why Amazon is so powerful.

Every seller that has access to this tool will be able to automatically purchase postage from USPS and then print the labels for shipping. Discounts are available for this service through Amazon and you will be billed on your settlement report. A few of the discounts include:

Delivery Confirmation is free for Priority Mail.

Delivery Confirmation for packages sent via First Class Mail, Parcel Post, or Media Mail is $0.19.

Buy insurance through Stamps.com, discounted from USPS rates for coverage under the Parcel Insurance Plan.

This service is from a partnership between Amazon and Stamps.com. Amazon does indicate that Stamps.com is the one responsible for service issues as well as any technical problems as it is there service. Stamps.com is really good service for online sellers, so if you do not have access to this tool in your Amazon Seller Central account, then try out Stamps.com. They usually will provide some free postage for new sign ups as well as other items at a discounted price.

Amazon has provided some step-by-step instructions for anyone interested in using the service. This instruction guide should answer any outstanding questions you may have about the service. This is obviously only for US sellers as it is using the United States Postal Service for shipping.

The marketplace niche is heating up as Buy.com plans to roll out a new white-label marketplace to be placed on retailer sites. This is an interesting approach for the mass merchant. After Buy.com got purchased by Rakuten Inc., they have really changed the way that they look at the online marketplace arena. Buy.com has allowed third part sellers to sell the same items that they list on their website. It has provided some more revenue that Buy.com might have lost when items were out of stock. This is the same approach that Amazon created when it started its marketplace, which is much older than Buy’s.

The white-label marketplace will be hosted by Buy.com and will give third party retailers the option of allowing their customers to purchase the over 7.5 million sku’s that Buy.com currently has listed. This will really open the offering that many retailers currently have and possibly bring a lot more traffic to these retailers. Buy is currently only working with a small subset of retailers, mostly ones that have national stores. Once they get this roll-out done, then they plan on opening it up to small and medium size retailers. This will change the game for these type of retailers as they will receive a commission from Buy.com and the other seller that are part of the Buy.com marketplace. This can help any lost sales that small retailers might get for out of stock products as well as really open up the product offering.

I think this is a good move for Buy.com as they will really open up their sku’s to other retailers and other sites. This could bring them more traffic and more sales. It looks like this is a way to more directly compete with Amazon and it might open the eyes of Amazon a little more. They might take head and try to create something similar to keep Buy.com from gaining ground. Amazon already has a partner program, but that is not the same thing as what Buy.com plans to offer. This should be good for the industry and it will really help out smaller sellers with succeeding online. If you are a small retailer, then put this on your radar as they plan on opening it up to you later on this year, which means you probably will be able to integrate by first quarter 2011.

These days online marketplaces are popping up everywhere from the new Walmart marketplace to Sears starting their own. While these are good marketplaces, we have found one that looks promising because it only deals with DVD’s, CD’s, Books, and Video Games. The marketplace was created by a previous ebay person, who wanted to simplify the processing of selling and buying online. He created Glyde to simplify the marketplace world.

Glyde is simple to search for products that you are interested in and they accept Visa and Mastercard as payments. The best part is selling on Glyde. They do not have any upfront costs, but do charge 10% when the product sells. The thing that we found kind of different is that Glyde will send you, the seller, a prepaid, pre-addressed envelope to ship the product that you sold. This means that you do not need to worry about finding something to ship your product in. Once your customer receives the item or items, you profit will be put into you Glyde account which can be pulled out by bank or wire transfer. This makes it simple, secure, and easy. This will be a great place for sellers to start their business or test the selling waters online. Go ahead and Checkout Glyde.com for your next purchase.
