Viewing Real Time Ads with Google Street View?
The ever so popular street view feature from Google Maps might be adding another feature. Google is always known for innovation and out of the box thinking, so why not have real time ads when you are using Street View? If you see a billboard while on street view, it most likely does not fit your needs and it could be old and not even there anymore. Google has been granted a patent to replace advertising space in the street view with real time ads.
The patent named “Claiming Real Estate in Panoramic or 3D Mapping Environments for Advertising” details some techniques that Google has developed for identifying advertising space on the maps, which in turn will be replaced with real time ads. This idea seems genius considering the possibilities of adding another value to the product already and gaining some good advertising dollars in the process.
Though it looks like Google has come up with another great idea for advertising in places where others wouldn’t think of it, they will have some walls to jump. There are a list of legal problems with this method. They will need to find out who owns the advertising space, such as billboards. They will have to get permissions to use this space as well as check with the advertiser that has actually paid for the billboard space. This could potentially irritate many advertisers that use billboards and other off line banners to reach their customer base. If Google can get around this and satisfy everyone, this will be a great technology jump in the world of online advertising. It seems the minds of Mountain View are working overtime these days. Do you think this will actually happen and if so, how effective will the advertising be?
